< . > ‘Istanbul in Gyeongju 2014’, the grand cultural festival to experience the cultural essence of Istanbul, Turkey, ‘the cradle of ancient civilizations’, celebrated the colorful opening with a great fanfare of cultural feast to exhibit ‘the start of new journey’ for 11 days from September 12, 2014 through September 22, 2014.

The City of Gyeongju hosted a welcoming event for the Mayor of Istanbul and the Delegations at Gyeongju City Hall in prior to the opening ceremony. Dr. Kadir TOPBAŞ, the Mayor of Istanbul, and Arslan Hakan Okçal, the Ambassador of Turkey in Korea, led about 30 delegations to visit Gyeongju City Hall on September 12 to meet with Choi Yangsik, the Mayor of Gyeongju, and the civil representatives.

“After the success of the Istanbul-Gyeongju World Culture Expo 2013 last year, the Mayor of Istanbul has shown the passion to continue the success and the friendship of Gyeongju and Turkey,” said the Mayor of Gyeongju to welcome Mayor TOPBAŞ and his delegations. “With Mehter Army Band Parade and various other events, this festival has more than what it needs to impress the people of Korea.” He also added, “This festival between Istanbul, the world’s capital of culture, and Gyeongju, the eastern end of the Silk Road, will contribute to the world culture,” and gave an invitation for the Istanbul Youth Football Club to perform in Gyeongju.

“We have flown thousands of kilometers with a hello from the people of Turkey,” said Mayor TOPBAŞ to begin his speech. “Korea and Turkey share a special friendship to fight through the Korean War together, so Silla’s old capital with a thousand years of history and Istanbul should hold up the historical value and march forward together with an eternal friendship.”

The opening ceremony was held at the special stage at Gyeongju Hwangseong Park and invited about 1,500 people, including Minister Jung Jongsup of the Ministry of Security and Public Administration, Minister Kim Jongdeok of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Chairman Kim Dongho of the Presidential Committee for Cultural Enrichment, Mayor Kadir TOPBAŞ of Istanbul, Ambassador Arslan Hakan Okçal of Turkey in Korea, Governor Kim Kwanyong of Gyeongbuk-do, Mayor Choi Yangsik of Gyeongju, local members of the National Assembly, and the civil representatives.

Starting with 'Punggo (the drum dance which expresses the spirit of horse-riding people who ran through the vast plains and the strength of Korean mothers)', the welcome dance, the participants prayed for the Turkish soldiers who fought in the Korean War, watched the promotional video, and listened to the opening speech. Minister Kim Jongdeok of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism bestowed the Bogwan Cultural Merit to Mayor Kadir TOPBAŞ of Istanbul in lieu of President Park Geun-hye for contributing to the cultural and artistic exchange. The ceremonial events included the Osman Army Band’s 'Mehter Army Band Parade' and the traditional Turkish folk dance, 'Anatolia’s Love Story' for the festive mood.

Hosted by the City of Istanbul and sponsored by Gyeongbuk-do and Gyeongju City, this event hosted about 27 programs at Gyeongju Hwanseong Park and vicinity. The Mehter Army Band paraded across the major streets of Gyeongju. Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, which is known as one of the world’s largest traditional marketplaces, was also recreated in Gyeongju. At the Bazaar, visitors could taste the traditional food and drinks of Turkey and experience the traditional handicraft items and traditional games.

The Istanbul Pavilion introduced Istanbul’s history, culture, arts, food, festivals, and tourism, and attract the attention of visitors with Lee Younghee Fashion Show, Kim Duksoo Samulnori (the music and/or performance performed with four traditional percussions of Buk, Janggu, Jing, and Ggoaenggwari) Performance, and the traditional performances of Gyeongbuk’s cities and towns.

As Turkey, the land of brothers, was deeply impressed by ‘Istanbul-Gyeongju World Culture Expo 2013’ held in Istanbul last year, this event in Gyeongju, Korea was an opportunity to introduce Istanbul’s history and culture and promote sustainable cultural exchanges and friendship. The friendship of Istanbul and Gyeongju beyond time and space has delivered to the world a message of peace beyond cultural exchange.
