'Nice to meet you' flowers, trees and birds
Gyeongju’s East Palace Garden, the first zoological botanical garden in Gyeongju-si made the first appearance to the citizenry.
Gyeongju East Palace Garden, composed of East Palace Botanical Garden, Bird Park and Agriculture Experience Facility, had a historical opening ceremony on September 10, 2013.
The East Palace Garden was established based on the deep connection between zoological botanical garden and Gyeongju. There is a record in Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) that rare flowering plants, birds and animals were raised for the first time in Korea.
Giparang and Jookjirang located next to the East Palace Garden are the cafe providing place for relaxation and also operated as souvenir shops. Not only the stone pagoda and flagpole support of grass square, but also the chiwei excavated from Donggung (East Palace) and Wolji (Pond) in Gyeongju (known as Imhae Jeonji, Anapji previously) were embodied and placed on the roof of botanical garden. Statue of lion guarding the entrance was placed to protect the botanical garden while facing the north and west side of stone statue and pillar of stone (Treasure No. 1427) from the Tomb of King Wonseong in Gyeongju (known as Gyeongju Gwaereung previously).
The 'East Palace Botanical Garden' is a glasshouse in a traditional style with 2,883㎡ of size and it also has a structure of Korean-style house in the era of the Silla Dynasty.
With botanical garden with subtropical theme as a main theme, it is divided into 5 theme gardens--Coconut Palm Garden, Foliage Garden, Flower and Tree Garden, Water Garden and Tropical Fruit Tree Garden--with about 400 types of 5,500 subtropical plants are planted.
Also, inside of the garden is decorated with Gyeongju Cheonmachong Saddle Flap Cheonmado, Donggung (East Palace) and Wolji (Pond) in Gyeongju (known as Imhae Jeonji, Anapji previously), Jaemaejeong (Well) in Gyeongju, etc. to utilize the materials of Silla and reflect the cultural heritage of Gyeongju.
'Gyeongju Bird Park' is a streamlined dome with the shape of bird's nest. It is composed of ecological experience center which is an experience study hall that people can see and feel the various animals (250 types of 1,000 animals), such as birds (parrot, hornbill, penguin, etc.), fishes, reptiles, on the 1st floor, and learning hall that people can access to the information on birds in the form of exhibition contents on the 2nd floor.
Donggung (East Palace) and Wolji (Pond) in Gyeongju (known as Imhae Jeonji, Anapji previously), which are the cultural heritage of Gyeongju, were reproduced, lotus sculpture gives attraction, and Phasianidae such as peacock, ostrich, turkey can be experienced in outdoor experience hall.
It is interesting that Bird Park was designed to be the place where the birds and humans are happy, and 26m of feather sculpture are in front of the entrance came into the spotlight.
Also, 'Gyeongju Bird Park' is registered to the 1st specialty zoological museum in Gyeongsangbuk-do, and it is the first experiential Flower and Bird Garden in Korea.
An area of Agriculture Experience and Facilities is 14,000㎡, and 2 glasshouses, 3 houses and packaging the fruit tree will be utilized as a experience hall for agricultural experimental plot and exchange between urban and rural area.
Also, it is operated as a agricultural experience facility and test research center for agricultural technology development such as Hide-and-Seek Garden which is a Children's Gardening Therapy Hall and Garden with 10,000 Bunches of Tomato for the promotion of Gyeongju tomatoes, and garden for blueberries and cherries where agricultural testing research is being conducted.
The city is expecting to change into a new tour destination from cultural tourism to experiential tourism through the opening of East Palace Garden, and many inquiries on the study of students’ experience have made a huge contribution to regional economic vitalization in Gyeongju is expected.
