< Started exchanging in 2011 and actively promoted friendship by participating in the International Youth (U-12) Football Tournament. > On August 21, 2014, Mayor Choi Yangsik of Gyeongju and Mayor Jozef Dvonc of Nitra, Slovakia have held the sisterhood agreement ceremony at Gyeongju City Hall to begin the exchange. Ambassador Milan Lajciak of Slovakia in Korea, who visited Korea in early August, also participated in the ceremony to congratulate on the ceremony.

Gyeongju and Nitra were introduced by Former Ambassador Dusan Bella of Slovakia to start the exchange in 2011 and has continued exchanges for several years, including the participation in Nitra's Agricultural Fair in 2012, signing of the Declaration of Intent of Exchange in April 2013, and invitation of Slovakia Nitra FC to the 『2013 Gyeongju International Youth Football Tournament』 in August.

Mayor Jozef Dvonc also visited Gyeongju with the team of 20 football players for the joining ceremony to participate in the 『2014 Gyeongju International Youth Football Tournament』 in Gyeongju from August 21 through 26.

Slovakia, since it was separated from Czech Republic 21 years ago, has risen as Korean companies base for business in Europe and Korea's friendship with Slovakia has developed mostly in the economic sector. However, there was almost no exchange between the local governments.

The sisterhood of the cities is very meaningful as it is the first exchange between the local governments and the it can extend to the friendship of the countries and active exchanges of the colleges and the agricultural sector.

Nitra is only 2 hours away from Vienna, Austria, the center of travel in Europe, and the oldest historical city in Slovakia. It developed as the capital of Great Moravia in the 9th Century C.E. Currently, the city cherishes many historical relics, including Nitra Castle, St. Emmeram's Cathedral, Synagogue (Jewish hall), and Nitra Museum.
