On January 18th, there was a lighting of a ceremonial signboard to mark and celebrate 100 days remaining until the 2011 World Taekwondo Championships.

Gyeongju is a city of ancient history and culture, but is also developing into a center of high technology and sports. The city is busily promoting the 2011 Gyeongju WTF World Taekwondo Championships.

The competition will be held from April 28th until May 6th. Ten thousand athletes and officials from around 150 countries are expected to compete and attend.

Last October 20th, Gyeongju City and competition organizers formed an organizing committee, and on November 23rd they held a rally for the success of the championship tournament. Throughout January of this year, the Organizing Committee participated in seven major events around the country to promote the 2011 World Taekwondo Championships.

At 2:00 pm on January 18th, with 100 days remaining until the tournament, a ceremonial signboard was lit in front of Gyeongju Station Square to promote the event. The signboard features several symbols of the competition and the city. There is an image of the taegeuk (the yin and yang symbol from the Korean flag) harmonized with a silhouette of a taekwondo kick, and also several cultural symbols of Gyeongju City; on the signboard there is also a countdown timer so people can see how many days remain until the competition opens. This will provide momentum for the preparations, and also raise the public's awareness of the competition and encourage their participation in the tournament.

The best efforts are being made to prepare for the competition. The stadium has been reconditioned, and in February the 2011 Korean National Taekwondo Trials were held in Gyeongju and the Korean Taekwondo Association conducted referee training in the city to build up their experience in advance of the tournament.

It is hoped that the 2011 Gyeongju WTF World Taekwondo Championships, in conjunction with the 2011 IAAF World Championships in Daegu and the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Busan, will create a benefit for the regional economy equivalent to around 50 million dollars.
