The lotus area at Anapji has become a major tourist attraction. As a result, Gyeongju City has decided to expand the lotus area from this year for the benefit of citizens and visitors.

The total area is being expanded to 62,800m2 (15.5 acres). The beautiful scene nicely complements Anapji, a central nighttime tourist spot in Gyeongju. The lotus flowers are in full bloom from early July to mid-September. Similar areas will be developed around Seochulji, Tongiljeon and Daereungwon (Tumuli Park).

The initial lotus area was 55,000m2 (13.6 acres). Through word of mouth it became popular among citizens and tourists, so Gyeongju City spent 65 million won (approximately US$60,000) to increase the size of the area and plant an additional 7,800m2 (1.9 acres) of lotuses. The charming sight is yet another pleasant experience for visitors to the city.

At the newly expanded area, a variety of lotuses will be planted from April 10th to 20th. New lotuses will also be neatly planted in the pond around Seochulji, after weeds and wild rice which disrupt lotus growth are removed. The area around the former Inwang Public Office will also be developed. The goal of the lotus area expansion is to add scenic beauty to historical sites in the eastern historical zone so that people visiting the areas can rest there and have pleasant memories of their visit.

Finally, every Friday evening from mid-April, there will be a “Small Concert in the Flower Garden” at the Anapji lotus area. For 24 weeks, citizens and visitors will be able to enjoy these musical performances among the quiet beauty of the lotus blossoms.
