< Promoting Safe and Convenient Sightseeing, Improving the City > Gyeongju City is planning to develop a new pedestrian and bicycle path along Imhaero (Imhae Street). The new path will provide a safe, convenient, attractive and environmentally friendly way for citizens and tourists to visit heritage sites in the city.

The 1.5 kilometer route will run from Bunhwang Temple to the Gyeongju National Museum, and then along the stream to Weoljeong Bridge, an ancient bridge which is under reconstruction. The 4.6-meter-wide pedestrian and bicycle path will feature rest areas and road lamps. Of special note, the path will be constructed using economical and eco-friendly material which is not only designed for long-term use, but is also specially constructed to be comfortable for people who use the path for exercise. The total cost is estimated at 150 million won (US$1.37 million).

The area between Bunhwang Temple and Weoljeong Bridge is known to be uncomfortable for pedestrians and cyclists, and thus was targeted by the city for improvement. Citizens and visitors will benefit from the increased safety and convenience of the path while moving between these particular heritage sites. The path is in the closing design stages, and construction will be carried out once the city's plans have been finalized and permission has been received from the Cultural Heritage Administration.

Once the path has been completed it will connect several of the city's most famous sites, including the aforementioned Bunhwang Temple, Gyeongju National Museum and Weoljeong Bridge, but also including the Hwangryong Temple Site, Anapji (Imhaejeonji), the Anapji lotus area, Weolseong and the Inyong Temple Site.

Final design briefing sessions were held at City Hall on March 31st. Gyeongju City mayor Yang-sik Choi, the project director, concerned parties, consultants and the construction company participated in the meetings.

An official from Gyeongju City said, “We hope that the Imhaero Pedestrian and Bicycle Path will improve the quality of life for citizens of Gyeongju. We also hope that the path will enhance the image of Gyeongju in the eyes of visitors to our city.”
