Conclusion of letter of intent for friendly relations between Gyeongju-Nitra, Slovakia

Mayor of Gyeongju visited Germany and Slovakia from April 1, 2013 for 7 days to promote Gyeongju-si and sign a letter of intent for friendly relations.

He participated in 'Gyeongju Sightseeing Photo Exhibition' while visiting Regensburg on Tuesday, April 2, and visited Regensburg City Hall on April 3 to meet Hans Schaidinger, Mayor of Regensburg and talk about the promotion and exchange of both cities.

And on April 5, letter of intent for friendly relations with Nitra, Slovakia was concluded. Mayor of Gyeongju-si had conversation with Jozef Dvonc, Mayor of Nitra about the beauty of both cities, as well as the promotional cooperation method in the future as countries with friendly relation. Especially, Mayor of Gyeongju showed Jozef Dvonc, Mayor of Nitra the picture of Gyeongju with the tablet PC, and spent a lot time with the introduction.

The ambassadors of each country were participating in the agreement ceremony. Dusan Bella, Slovak ambassador to Korea and Park Sanghun, Korean ambassador to Slovakia participated and congratulated the concolusion of letter of intent. Dusan Bella, Slovak ambassador to Korea had visited Gyeongju-si in 2010 and he expressed a huge happiness.

Slovakia is better known as Czechoslovakia in Korea. Czech Republic and Slovakia separated 20 years ago already, and Nitra, Slovakia is well known as advanced base to enter the European market for Korean companies.

Dvonc, Mayor of Nitra stated "the cities are somewhat geographically far from each other, but I hope it is an opportunity of mutual development for both cities through the close exchange" to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Korea-Slovakia diplomatic relations, and also stated "I am very interested in exchange between the universities and economic exchange" and promised that he will visit Gyeongju soon.

Mayor of Gyeongju stated "this conclusion of the letter of intent between two cities is very meaningful since it is the first exchange between the local governments," and "Nitra is the oldest historical and cultural city in Slovakia which is similar to Gyeongju, and the exchange between two cities is expected."

Relationship with Slovakia started from last August since representative of Gyeongju received an invitation from the Mayor of Nitra to participate in 2012 International Agricultural Exhibition. He agreed with the proceeding exchange with Gyeongju-si.

Nitra is the oldest historical city in Slovakia where was developed as a capital of Great Moravia in 9th century. Currently, there are many remains and relics such as Nitra Castle, St. Emmeram's Cathedral, Synagogue (Jewish church), Nitra Museum, etc.
