Mayor of Gyeongju visited Yangzhou, Jiangsu and Yichang, Hubei, China, which are the friendly relations, for the attraction of Chinese tourists and cultural exchange from October 14 to 19, 2013.
On 15th, after the pleasant conversation with Mayor of Yangzhou, Mayor of Gyeongju participated in 'Sacrificial Rite Ceremony at Choi Chiwon Memorial Hall' as a participant offering first glass prior to the 'Goun International Academic Conference.'
During the pleasant conversation with Zhu Minyang, the Mayor of Yangzhou, Mayor of Gyeongju suggested expansion of exchange among adolescents and between the universities, and also talked about cooperation plan related with the Conference on International Historical City planned to be held in Yangzhou next year.
After that, Mayor of Gyeongju participated in 'Goun International Academic Conference' that learning the studies and course of life of Choi Chiwon who led the exchange of East Asia, and reviewed Choi Chiwon's internationality in a modern point of view with the research of his study by participating in the lecture and debate forum about 'Internationality and East Asia of Goun Choi Chiwon,' the topic of this year.
Gyeongju-si and Yangzhou set up the friendly relations in November 2008 and preceding an active exchange. Also, Yangzhou is the city where the Silla-Bang (Residential district of Silla) was settled in the 8th century, and Goun Choi Chiwon, a great Confucianist and a good writer of Silla in 9th century, held his position for 5 years in that city--there is a deep connection with Gyeongju.
Choi Chiwon made himself a name as a good writer in China with 『Tohwangso Gyekmoon (Declaration from Choi Chiwon that suggested surrender to Huang Chao)』 that suppressed Huang Chao Rebellion (peasant rebellion during the era of Emperor Xizong of Tang) by a letter, not a military force. He stayed in Yangzhou for 5 years and became more popular by leaving a number of literature based historical sources, such as 『Gyeweon Pilgyeong (Plowing the Cassia Grove with a Writing Brush)』.
Especially, Choi Chiwon Memorial Hall was established in Yangzhou for the symbol of Korea-China friendship in 2008, and various commemoration ceremonies, such as conferences, are held every year. There is a memorial hall with Choi Chiwon's statue and monument in a traditional Chinese structure in Yangzhou, and exhibition room with Choi Chiwon's 200 relics and books such as Tohwangso Gyekmoon and Gyeweon Pilgyeong that made himself a name in Tang Dynasty is located next to the memorial hall.
